Our customers use BIN data for many reasons - here are a few of the most common:
Using BIN data can prevent fraudulent transactions by verifying that the card used is issued by a legitimate bank, identifying suspicious purchasing patterns, and identify if a card is being used to complete a transaction in a different country than the card is issued from. Using this data, companies can add reviews or block a transaction, reducing chargebacks for which payment providers are liable.
Route transactions to the correct issuing bank for authorization and settlement using BIN data, thereby increasing approval rates.
Apply the appropriate risk management measures by obtaining information through BIN data about transactions that may pose a higher risk. This information could be large or unusual purchases or transactions involving regions or countries with higher levels of risk or fraud.
On scale, BIN data is useful to gain insights into customer groups. An insight such as, what country customers come from can e.g. strengthen targeted marketing efforts.
On a customer level, the data can be used to tailor specific products or campaigns for e.g. business accounts vs private accounts or different card category levels and types.
Flag payments where surcharging is needed by receiving data on the country of the card issuer and card type. This is useful for payments e.g. made by cards issued outside the EU that are being used within the EU, or debit payments.
If you are handling credit card payments, BIN data will be useful to you.
